Shares

Issue

Microsoft Windows allows users to share files with other users, however, if a share is not protected properly, unauthorized users might be able to access the information in the share.

Solution

Any shares found on the scanned computer are listed in the security report, including Administrative shares. Users should review the list of shares and remove any shares that are not needed. For those shares required on the system, the share permissions should be reviewed to ensure that access is limited to authorized users only, and not shared to Everyone.

To disable a share on a computer running Windows XP or Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  3. Right-click the share to disable the share or change the share permissions.

To disable a share on a computer running Windows NT 4.0

  1. Start Windows Explorer.
  2. Right-click on the folder that you want to stop sharing, and then click Sharing.
